Malaysia introduces National Energy Transition Roadmap
29 November 2023
On 27 July 2023, Malaysia’s Ministry of Economy launched Part 1 of the National Energy Transition Roadmap (“NETR”). The NETR aims to accelerate the transition to clean energy, in line with the Twelfth Malaysia Plan 2021-2025 which outlines Malaysia’s aspirations to achieve net zero greenhouse gas (“GHG”) emissions by as early as 2050, and the National Energy Policy 2022-2040 which lays the groundwork for the transformation of the energy landscape.
Part 1 of the NETR outlines 10 flagship catalyst projects and initiatives based on six energy transition levers:
· Energy efficiency |
· Renewable energy |
· Hydrogen |
· Bioenergy |
· Green mobility |
· Carbon capture, utilisation and storage |
On 29 August 2023, Part 2 of the NETR was launched. It focuses on establishing the energy mix, GHG emissions reduction pathway, selected targets and initiatives.
