MYCC to tackle issues relating to sugar in Malaysia

On 7 June 2023, the Malaysia Competition Commission (“MyCC”) stated that it would join forces with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living to manage issues surrounding the supply and sale of sugar in the market. The MyCC stated that it is aware of the various issues surrounding the sugar market which include allegations of hoarding, conditional sale and refusal to supply by certain players in the market.

MyCC is actively monitoring the progress and behaviour of players in this market and urged all relevant players from both the downstream and upstream market to prevent any conduct which would exclude producers or wholesalers from the market, and ensure that their activities and policies are in line with relevant laws, particularly the Competition Act 2010.
