Retirement and re-employment ages under Retirement and Re-employment Act 1993 raised to 63 and 68

From 1 July 2022, the retirement age and re-employment age under the Retirement and Re-employment Act 1993 have been raised to 63 and 68 (previously 62 and 67) respectively:
- Prescribed minimum retirement age: Pursuant to the Retirement and Re-employment (Prescribed Minimum Retirement Age) Notification 2022, the prescribed minimum retirement age for employees is 63 years of age with effect from 1 July 2022.
- Prescribed re-employment age: Pursuant to the Retirement and Re-employment (Prescribed Re-employment Age) Notification 2022, the prescribed re-employment age for employees is 68 years of age with effect from 1 July 2022.
Further, to enable older Singaporeans who are able and wish to continue working to do so, the Retirement and Re-employment Act 1993 has been amended with effect from 1 July 2022 to set the maximum possible statutory retirement age and re-employment age at 65 and 70 respectively.
By way of background, in 2019, the Singapore Government accepted the recommendations of the Tripartite Workgroup on Older Workers’ to raise the retirement and re-employment ages to 65 and 70 respectively by 2030 in order to support older workers to continue working for longer if they wish to do so and improve their retirement adequacy.
